The list of viruses and spywares is always changing. As anti-virus software makers and users successfully block one method, another two or three pop up in their place. Take a look at the list to the right. If you have any of these on your computer, then you have been compromised. Some are easy to fix with a simple scan from popular malware programs, others require much deeper work to eradicate. Check back often as this list is continually being updated.
Symptoms of spyware or viral infections typically include one or more of the following:
- An unwanted change to your home page or search engine
- Significant slowing of your Internet experience
- New icons on your desktop such as My PC Backup, Optimizer Pro, Synch Folder, and Advanced System Optimizer, to name a few. Note that most of these bad programs have names that make them sound like useful tools.
Microsoft nor any legitimate company will ever call you to inform you of your system being compromised. It is very popular these days for nefarious operators to randomly call and tell you that your system is infected or that your system is messing up servers somewhere. They will make it sound as if they are from Microsoft and they are VERY BELIEVABLE. The reason this is so popular is because it is SO SUCCESSFUL. DO NOT hear them out. Their job is to scam you for money to "fix" problems on your machine. And most importantly, never, ever, let them access your computer.
